Security guard job description is rather wide as they are expected to shoulder a number of responsibilities. From patrolling and apprehending suspects to prevent crimes, to surveillance, location monitoring and drafting security plans, their job description varies depending on their job profile and organization. Security guard jobs at places which require high levels of protection, such as government buildings, military bases, and transportation facilities, require extensive formal training. Guards at airports and train stations inspect passengers' luggage using metal detectors and x-ray machines in order to screen for weapons, explosives, or otherwise banned items. Guards at government buildings and military bases inspect all vehicles and persons entering a facility. Such guards are usually armed and have special clearance to detain criminals and make arrests when necessary.

Security guard training courses offered by numerous agencies or educational institutions utilize nearly the same course outlines. Possibly one of the few distinctions is the legal code as each state possesses its own set of laws. An additional distinction may be the business policy. This particularly applies if your training company offering the program is especially training you for immediate employment. Security guard training programs often must be completed during the first 100 days on the job, though this requirement varies by state. Topics covered during the training programs include basic security techniques, investigations, report writing, patrolling tactics, firearm use and emergency procedures. Workers specializing in particular types of security management, such as private, airport, armored car or armed escort, may need to take additional courses to learn the necessary skills for these specialty security professions.
